What to Wear for Your Spring Family Photography Session

Spring is one of the most beautiful times of the year for family photography! The blooming flowers, fresh greenery, and soft golden light create the perfect backdrop for capturing your family’s love and connection. But one of the biggest questions I get from families is: What should we wear? Here are my top tips for choosing the perfect outfits for your outdoor spring session.

1. Go for Light and Airy Colors

Spring is all about soft, fresh, and natural tones. Light pastels, neutrals, and earthy hues work beautifully with the season’s bright and cheerful background. Think soft blues, blush pinks, sage greens, warm creams, and light grays. These colors complement the natural scenery without overpowering the photos.

2. Avoid Loud Patterns and Logos

While patterns can add texture and personality, too many bold prints can be distracting. Subtle floral prints, delicate stripes, or small checks work well, but it’s best to avoid large logos, busy patterns, or neon colors. These elements can take attention away from the most important part of the session—your family!

3. Coordinate, Don't Match

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same exact outfit. Instead, aim for a coordinated look with complementary colors and textures. Choose a color palette of two to three coordinating shades, and mix them throughout everyone’s outfits. This keeps the look cohesive while allowing each family member to show off their unique style.

4. Think About Layers and Textures

Spring weather can be unpredictable, so layering is key! Light cardigans, flowy dresses, linen shirts, and soft sweaters add dimension to your photos while keeping you comfortable. Accessories like scarves, hats, or a delicate floral crown for little ones can also enhance your look without being too overpowering.

5. Dress for Comfort and Movement

Family sessions often involve a lot of movement—walking, playing, snuggling—so be sure to wear clothes you can move in comfortably. Flowing dresses, well-fitted (but not too tight) pants, and comfortable shoes will allow you to relax and enjoy the experience while looking great in every shot.

6. Consider the Location

Think about the setting for your session. If we’re in a lush, green field, earthy tones and soft pastels will complement the surroundings beautifully. If we’re at a greenhouse or flower-filled garden, soft neutrals will let the vibrant colors shine. I’m always happy to help you choose a color scheme that works best for your session’s location.

7. Plan Ahead

Give yourself plenty of time to pick outfits and try them on before your session. Lay everything out together to see how the colors and styles coordinate. If you’re unsure, send me a photo of your outfit ideas, and I’d be happy to offer suggestions!

Final Thoughts

Your family’s wardrobe choices should reflect your personalities while enhancing the beauty of the season. By following these tips, you'll create timeless, beautiful images that you’ll cherish forever. I can't wait to capture your family’s special moments this spring!
