What to Wear for Your Winter Family Photos in Northern Colorado ❄️

Winter in Northern Colorado is such a cozy, beautiful season for family photos — soft light, rich colors, and maybe even a little snow. Whether your session is in Windsor, Fort Collins, or tucked up near the foothills, winter brings a calm, timeless beauty that makes your photos extra special.

One of the most common questions I get as a Northern Colorado family photographer is:👉 “What should we wear for our winter photo session?”

So here are my favorite tips for choosing outfits that look amazing, feel comfortable, and fit perfectly with the winter landscape.

1. Start with Cozy Layers

Layers photograph beautifully — and they keep you warm! Try mixing materials like knit sweaters, flannel shirts, denim jackets, vests, or wool coats. They add texture and visual interest while keeping your photos feeling relaxed and natural.

For little ones, cozy layers like sweaters, boots, or beanies look adorable and help them stay comfortable during chilly weather.

2. Choose Colors That Pop Against Winter Scenery

Winter light is soft and neutral, which means your outfits can really stand out. Some of my favorite color palettes for winter family photos in Northern Colorado include:

  • Neutrals: cream, tan, gray, or ivory for a timeless, classic look

  • Earth tones: olive, rust, brown, or mustard for warmth against snow or tall grass

  • Deep tones: burgundy, navy, or emerald green for a rich, wintery pop

Tip: if we have snow, avoid pure white tops — they can blend into the background. Instead, choose off-white, oatmeal, or soft cream tones for the perfect contrast.

3. Coordinate — Don’t Match

You don’t need everyone in identical outfits. Instead, choose 2–3 colors that work well together and mix tones and textures.

For example:

  • Mom in a cream sweater and brown boots

  • Dad in jeans and a forest green pullover

  • Kids in layers with pops of color or subtle plaid

This approach keeps your family looking coordinated but natural — not overly matched.

4. Add a Few Details

Accessories make a big difference! Think scarves, hats, boots, and textured layers that add depth and personality. A chunky knit scarf or a neutral beanie photographs beautifully and helps tell that cozy, winter story.

And yes — you can absolutely wear your coat for a few shots! A classic wool or neutral-colored coat looks great on camera and adds that authentic Colorado winter feel.

5. Be Ready for Colorado Weather

If there’s one thing we know about Northern Colorado winters, it’s that the weather can change fast! Some days are sunny and 50°, others are snowy and cold.

Bring layers and warm-up coats between shots, especially for little ones. A blanket can also be a cute prop and keep everyone comfortable. And if all else fails — a post-session stop for hot cocoa never hurts! ☕️
