Welcoming a new baby into your home is such a special time, and an in-home lifestyle newborn session captures those beautiful, intimate moments with your growing family. One of the most common questions I get from parents is, “What should we wear?” Choosing the right outfits will help create timeless, cozy images that feel natural and reflect your family’s love. Here are my top tips for dressing your family for your newborn session:

Keep It Neutral and Soft

Soft, neutral tones like whites, creams, beiges, and pastels photograph beautifully and create a warm, timeless look. These colors also keep the focus on your baby and the connection between your family members rather than on bold or distracting patterns. Avoid bright colors and heavy patterns, as they can reflect onto your baby’s skin and take away from the soft, organic feel of the session.

Comfort is Key

Your session will likely include plenty of cuddles, snuggles, and natural interactions, so it’s important to wear outfits that feel comfortable and allow movement. Flowy dresses, soft knits, and lightweight fabrics work well for moms. Dads can opt for a well-fitted t-shirt or a casual button-up with comfortable pants.

Coordinating Over Matching

Rather than everyone wearing the exact same color, choose a soft color palette and mix in different shades and textures to create depth and interest in your photos. Think about choosing a few neutral base colors and adding layers like cardigans or light scarves to bring dimension.

Simple is Best for Baby

I provide neutral-colored soft swaddles or simple onsies for your little one, which will keep them cozy and looking timeless in the photos. If you’d like to dress your baby in an outfit for part of the session, choose something simple like a soft onesie, or a knit romper to keep the focus on their tiny features and sweet expressions.

Barefoot and Natural

Since your session takes place at home, I always recommend going barefoot for a natural and relaxed feel. For babies, tiny toes and fingers are some of the sweetest details to capture, so simple is best when it comes to their wardrobe.

Don’t Forget About Textures

Adding textures like soft knit blankets, linen fabrics, or delicate lace details can create a cozy and visually interesting aesthetic. These little touches enhance the overall warmth of your images.

Final Thoughts

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourselves! Your newborn session is all about capturing the love and connection in your family, and the right wardrobe will complement those beautiful moments. If you have any questions or need outfit guidance, I’m always happy to help with suggestions. I can’t wait to document this special chapter for your family!
