Your senior year only happens once, and your senior photos should feel just as unforgettable! Whether you're dreaming of wildflowers, mountain views, downtown charm, or golden fields, a little preparation goes a long way toward creating beautiful, natural images you'll love for years to come.
As a Northern Colorado senior photographer serving Windsor, Fort Collins, Greeley, Severance, Timnath, Loveland, and the surrounding areas, I want your session to be relaxed, fun, and completely you. Here are my favorite tips to help you get ready!
1. Wear Something That Feels Like You
The best outfits are the ones that make you feel confident. Choose 2–3 outfits that show different sides of your personality. You might bring:
- A casual everyday outfit
- A dressy outfit
- Something that represents your hobbies, sports, or interests
Solid colors, soft patterns, and timeless pieces photograph beautifully. Earth tones, pastels, denim, and neutrals are always great choices for outdoor senior portraits in Northern Colorado.
Try everything on beforehand to make sure it fits comfortably and makes you feel amazing.
2. Don't Forget the Details
The little things make a big difference! A few days before your session:
- Clean your shoes.
- Steam or iron your clothes.
- Remove hair ties from your wrist.
- Trim and clean your nails.
- Charge your phone (for music and behind-the-scenes fun!).
- Pack everything the night before.
3. Treat Yourself Before Your Session
Your senior photos are the perfect excuse for a little self-care. A fresh haircut about a week before your session is ideal. If you color your hair, schedule your appointment one to two weeks beforehand. Many seniors also love getting their makeup professionally done. It photographs beautifully while still looking natural. If you're doing your own makeup, don't be afraid to add just a little more than you normally wear—it helps your features stand out in photos.
4. Bring Accessories
Accessories help make your gallery unique! Consider bringing:
- A cute hat
- A jean jacket
- Boots or sneakers for different looks
- Jewelry
- Flowers
- A letterman jacket
- Sports equipment
- Musical instruments
- Books
- Your cap and gown (if you already have it!)
These personal touches help tell your story.
5. Get Plenty of Rest
The night before your session, drink lots of water and get a good night's sleep. Feeling rested helps you look refreshed and confident, and you'll have so much more energy to laugh, explore, and enjoy your session.
6. Trust the Process
You do not need to know how to pose. Seriously! One of the biggest things I hear is: "I'm awkward in front of the camera." Almost every senior says that—and almost every senior leaves saying, "That was actually so much fun!" I'll guide you every step of the way with natural posing, movement, and prompts that help you feel comfortable and confident. No modeling experience required.
7. Bring Someone Who Makes You Smile
You're welcome to bring your mom, best friend, sister, or another supportive person along.
The best hype squad? Someone who makes you laugh and helps you feel like yourself.
8. Have Fun!
This session is about celebrating everything you've accomplished and everything that's ahead of you. We'll laugh, explore beautiful locations, chase golden light, and create photos that truly reflect who you are during this exciting season of life.
