If you’ve ever tried to take photos with a toddler, you already know—they run the show. Some days they’ll sit still, grin, and give you those sweet picture-perfect smiles. But a lot of the time? They want to wander, explore, wiggle, snack, investigate a pinecone, chase a bug, or do literally anything except look at the camera.

I’ve had full one-hour sessions where a toddler wouldn’t look at me once, no matter how much I sang, danced, jumped, or made silly animal noises. (Yes, all of that has happened… more than once!) And you know what? That’s completely okay.

My Best Advice: Let Go of the “Perfect” Picture

The most meaningful photos don’t usually come from everyone sitting still with perfect smiles. They come from the in-between moments—playing, laughing, cuddling, and simply being together.

Kids are naturally curious and full of life. When we follow their lead, the session becomes relaxed and genuine, and your photos reflect exactly who they are in this stage of life. And someday, you’ll look back and be so grateful you have those little glimpses of their personality—whether they were shy, goofy, serious, independent, or full of energy.

Don’t Stress—Just Be Present

Instead of worrying about where they’re looking or whether they’re smiling, lean in. Hold their hand. Toss them in the air. Snuggle close. Whisper something silly. Let them run and then scoop them up for a hug. When you’re connecting with your child, the photos always shine.

And yes—if we catch a few smiles along the way, that’s great too. But the goal is bigger than that. It’s about remembering your child exactly as they are right now.

The Beauty of Candid Childhood

At the end of the day, the season you’re in matters. Toddlers grow and change so quickly, and these fleeting stages are worth documenting—chaos, curiosity, giggles, wiggles and all.

So come to your session ready to play, ready to laugh, and ready to embrace the moment. I’ll take care of the rest.
