Tips from a Windsor, Colorado Family Photographer

If the thought of family photos has you breaking into a sweat, you’re not alone—parents often worry about how their kids will behave during a session. But here’s the truth: it doesn’t have to be stressful, and it definitely doesn’t have to be perfect.

In fact, the best photos usually come from real moments—giggles, twirls, bear hugs, and the kind of connection you can’t pose. So how do we set your kids up for success (and genuine joy) without relying on snacks or screen time?

Here are a few tried-and-true tips to help your session feel like fun—for everyone.

1. Hype It Up (But Keep It Light)

A little excitement goes a long way! In the days leading up to your session, talk about it like it’s an adventure or a special outing.

Try saying: “We’re going to play together and take some pictures—it’s going to be fun!”

Skip the pressure of “you need to smile” or “you have to behave.” The more relaxed you are, the more your kids will be too.

2. Let Them Be Themselves

It’s okay if your toddler wants to run barefoot in circles or if your six-year-old insists on twirling her dress every five minutes. I love capturing kids just as they are in this season of life.

These little quirks? They’re what make the photos meaningful. Let them play, explore, and move—we’ll work those natural moments into the magic.

3. Build In Some Wiggle Room

We keep sessions moving and fun, with a mix of movement and calm. I’ll gently guide your family with prompts that invite connection and play—not stiff posing.

I also leave time for breaks, deep breaths, or a moment to reset if anyone needs it.

4. Give Them a Job

Kids love to feel helpful or important. Give them a role—whether it’s helping hold the baby’s hand, making mom laugh, or spotting something silly.

Try this: “Can you help me find the biggest leaf?” or “Let’s surprise Dad with a big hug!”

5. Focus on Connection, Not Perfection

Your only job? Love on your people. Snuggle them close, whisper a joke, swing them in your arms, or just be present. We’ll capture a beautiful mix of posed portraits and real, joy-filled in-betweens.

The more connected you feel, the happier your kids will be.
